Audiophile Hobbist’s worst fear upon his Journey.

When we sat out on a journey, we seek to discover a new part of us or wake a part of us that is sleep. And normally, like any journey you sat out on, we pack a lunch for the ride. We have a pretty good idea of the length of the journey and we plan ahead for that length. We pack our cars and backpacks for long nights ahead and we fuel the car. We make sure all the doors are locked and the lights are cut off and we take off down the street. But sometimes you can mentally prepare yourself for a long journey, only to find out that journey didn’t take you that long and you packed up the care and bags along with your mental preparation for a long journey. You even convinced yourself that this was going to be the best journey of your life. But now that a year’s journey turned out to be 3 weeks, what then? What are you left with? I mean, you have gotten all the info and sights you believed were going to take you a year to see in 3 weeks and now it’s over. On one hand, you are happy about the experience and the accomplishments. You did something that takes others years to do in 3 weeks. You deserve to be proud of yourself but then why do you feel so empty? Because the Journey is what brings you happiness…not the destination.

I learned that recently. After finally removing all the placebo, hype, and biasedness I discovered the unfiltered truth that what I had was already the best I was going to get for under $1200 for headphones and the best I was going to get for the amp and Dac. Basically, I have the endgame without needing to spend endgame money and collecting 10 pairs of headphones that have very little difference between them. Sure I could have purchased the 660’s and said the same thing or the 6xx and said the same thing. Bottom line the Sennheiser lineup has no real worth changes to them that justify the purchasing of more than one of them. But being that the Sub-bass and intimacy are the areas that means a good deal to me … the 58x was the best fit for me. And being that all other headphones more expensive are designed to add more soundstage..which makes them less intimate…then it didn’t matter how big the soundstage was for any other headphone. So when taking away the entire Sennheiser lineup because none of them had Sub-bass like the 58x and then you remove all headphones that have bigger soundstage because this removes the intimacy that I love, the headphones under $1200 disappears greatly especially if you looking for a price that is justified in its performance like the 58x is( I would spend $1200 easily if you can prove I will get $1200 worth out of that headphone or setup). Then finally the Vocals, imaging, and comfort of the 58x are the last on the list of things I absolutely have to have, this further destroys what is left of the headphone market options for me. This mixed with the THX 789 DAC with all the connections I need and power draw I need along with the ability to run balanced XLR without a Balance DAC and still give the same power and advantage of the zero noise floor, then what you have is indisputable. Hence why a journey I thought would last for years is now over in a matter of weeks. And while happy that I have everything I wanted…I am sad that my journey is over before I was ready for it to be and that’s the worst fear I guess.
